A new study has brought reassuring news for older adults and those who use medical marijuana: lifetime marijuana use is not linked to cognitive decline or a higher risk of developing dementia, challenging a common belief that marijuana use automatically harms brain health later in life.

What the Study Examined

Researchers analyzed data from two large groups of adults, including hundreds of thousands of participants. They compared people who had used marijuana at some point in their lives with those who had never used it. The study focused on memory, problem-solving, thinking speed, overall cognitive performance, and risk of dementia.

Key Findings

  • No link to faster cognitive decline: People who had used marijuana in their lifetime did not experience faster drops in memory or thinking skills as they aged compared to non-users.

  • No increase in dementia risk: Lifetime marijuana use was not associated with a higher likelihood of developing dementia later in life.

  • Slightly higher test scores in some users: Some marijuana users scored better on memory and reasoning tests at the start of the study, though this may be influenced by factors such as education or lifestyle rather than marijuana use itself.

Why This Matters

For years, there has been concern that any use of marijuana could lead to memory problems or increase dementia risk in older age. This study shows that occasional or past marijuana use is not a major factor in cognitive aging. Older adults and patients using marijuana for medical purposes can take comfort in these findings, though moderation and proper medical guidance are still important.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this study adds to growing evidence that lifetime marijuana use does not automatically harm brain health. Older adults who have used marijuana in the past, those considering a medical marijuana card in Iowa, and current medical marijuana patients can be encouraged that their cognitive health can not be negatively impacted.
