Is Marijuana Legal in Iowa?
Yes, medical marijuana is legal in Iowa for patients with qualifying medical conditions. The program has undergone significant expansions since its inception. In May 2017, the Medical Cannabidiol Act was signed into law, allowing patients to access marijuana products containing both CBD and THC. ​
As of June 2020, the law was further amended to increase the allowable THC limit for patients from 3% to 4.5 grams over a 90-day period. This change aimed to enhance the efficacy of medical marijuana treatments for patients.​

Currently, Iowa's medical marijuana program permits the use of oral forms-tablets, capsules, liquids, tinctures and sublingual forms, topical forms, nebulizable, suppositories, and vaporization. However, raw flower is not an allowed form in Iowa. ​

This certification will be submitted to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, and you will be able to access dispensaries statewide with your medical marijuana card.

What Information and Forms Are Required When a Patient Applies for a Medical Marijuana ID Card?

After submitting their application to the state, patients should keep an eye out for their application reference number. The application reference number is found in the verification email sent by DHHR. The application processing could take up to 1 week, and patients will receive their valid digital card in their email as a PDF attachment.

Don't forget to renew your certification & card annually! If you forget to renew, you will have to complete the application process all over again.
