Medical marijuana patients in Iowa will soon have easier access to their medicine. Governor Kim Reynolds has officially signed House File 990 (HF 990), a new law that doubles the number of licensed medical marijuana dispensaries allowed to operate in the state! The change increases Iowa's dispensary cap from five locations to ten, marking the most significant expansion of the state's medical marijuana program in recent years.

For many patients, especially those living in rural communities, this expansion should make a meaningful difference in how easily they can obtain their medication.

What Does the New Law Do?

Before HF 990 was signed, Iowa law allowed only five medical marijuana dispensaries statewide. Under the new law, that number will increase to ten. As of June 2026, state officials can now issue additional licenses, allowing more dispensaries to open across Iowa.

The legislation received strong bipartisan support in the Iowa Legislature before reaching Governor Reynolds' desk. Lawmakers and patient advocates argued that the existing limit made it difficult for many patients to access medical marijuana products, particularly in areas located far from one of the state's few dispensaries.

Why This Expansion Matters

For years, patients and advocates have pointed to Iowa's limited number of dispensaries as one of the biggest barriers within the state's medical marijuana program. While medical pharmacies with traditional prescription medicine are widely available throughout Iowa, medical marijuana patients have had only five dispensary locations to serve the entire state.

As a result, some patients have had to travel several hours round-trip just to purchase their medicine. For individuals managing chronic pain, cancer, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, and other qualifying conditions, these long drives can be physically challenging.

By doubling the number of dispensaries, Iowa hopes to reduce travel burdens and improve access for patients who depend on medical marijuana as part of their treatment plan. More locations could also help reduce wait times and improve convenience for patients across the state.

A Step Forward for Iowa Patients

The Iowa Medical Cannabidiol Board has previously recommended increasing the number of dispensary licenses to improve geographic access to medical marijuana products. State officials finally recognized that patients in many parts of Iowa were underserved under the existing system.

While expanding dispensaries does not change Iowa's qualifying conditions or other program rules, it does represent an important improvement in patient access. More dispensaries mean more opportunities for patients to obtain their medication closer to home.

Many advocates view this legislation as a positive step toward strengthening Iowa's medical marijuana program and making it more patient-friendly.

What Happens Next?

Now that HF 990 has been signed into law, state regulators can begin the process of approving additional dispensary licenses. New locations will likely take time to open, but patients can expect to see expanded access as the program grows.

As new dispensaries become operational, Iowa patients will have more choices about where to purchase their medical marijuana products, helping create a more accessible and convenient system statewide.

How to Get an Iowa Medical Marijuana Card

In order to access dispensaries in Iowa and legally use marijuana, you must have an active medical card. If you have a qualifying medical condition, getting your medical marijuana card is straightforward.

The first step is meeting with a licensed medical marijuana doctor who can determine whether medical marijuana is appropriate for your condition. That’s where we come in! If approved, you'll receive the certification needed to register with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services - our team will help you with this step during your appointment.

After submitting your application to the state, they will review your information within 3 to 5 business days, and, if approved, your Iowa medical marijuana card will be sent to you by email. Final Thoughts

The signing of HF 990 is welcome news for Iowa medical marijuana patients. By doubling the number of dispensaries allowed to operate in the state, lawmakers have taken an important step toward improving access for patients who rely on medical marijuana to manage their condition.

While there is still room for growth within Iowa's medical marijuana program, increasing the number of dispensaries will help reduce travel times, improve convenience, and make it easier for patients to obtain their medicine.

If you're interested in becoming a medical marijuana patient in Iowa, now is a great time to get started. With expanded access on the way, more patients than ever will be able to access licensed dispensaries and purchase the medical marijuana products they need.
